Dog doors can be mounted in wood, metal or fiberglass doors. I would recommend a double flap door on any exterior door. Double flap doors are energy efficient and will help control your energy bills. Single flap doors are more beneficial on interior doors, three-season porches or other areas where insulation is not a factor. If your door has raised panels, make sure the center of the panel has the same thickness as the edge of the door. If there is a difference in thickness, you will have trouble with mounting plastic frame dog doors, as they can flex when you tighten the screws down.
